On Wednesday afternoon, a particularly youthful team headed to Barnsley to wrap up our Under-18 Premier League Cup campaign, capping off a hectic week for our Academy.
Although we were already out of the competition, the last group stage match gave a lot of schoolboy players a chance to experience the pressures of competitive Under-18 football early on. In fact, seven players on our starting lineup were from the Under-16s, and two more came off the bench in the second half.
In the end, Barnsley’s physical advantage and experience paid off, as they turned a 1-0 halftime lead into a 5-0 triumph at their training field.
Rafael Monteiro and Fabio Jalo each contributed four goals to the score.
Coach Stuart Lewis will again shuffle his roster for our final league game at this level before Christmas on Saturday (11am UK, live on SPURSPLAY), against West Ham United, after making significant changes in response to last weekend’s thrilling victory at Fulham in the Under-18 Premier League. Several first- and second-year scholars are expected to return.
To wrap off our youth team programme for 2023, we then visit Brighton & Hove Albion in a crucial Under-17 Premier League Cup matchup next Tuesday. We know that a win will advance us to the quarterfinals as we look to defend the championship.
